What is Copy Editing and why is it necessary?
Copy editing is a process of checking a document to uncover and correct inconsistencies. By clearing up any ambiguities, awkward and convoluted writing in the document, you allow the reader to concentrate on reading rather than deciphering. Awkward and Inconsistent writing styles, which include grammatical and spelling errors break one of the fundamental golden rules; interrupting the reader mid-flow causes them to attempt to decipher the meaning rather than understanding what you wanted to convey.
To keep a reader’s attention, it is necessary to have good structure and flow, thus ensuring they do not lose interest completely in the article, book or even just an advert on a website. If a reader has to stop too often to interpret the meaning of a paragraph or sentence they will not bother to continue and will be less inclined to come back for a ‘second go’. Often you will have lost them for good. The old adage applies ‘You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression’.
Little understood nuances in the English language can inevitably ruin a good story. We can help remove inconsistencies that would otherwise spoil the document composition and flow.
